SECOND QUALI CANCELLED DUE TO HIGH WIND

Gusting winds of 32 knots and the threat of more torrential rain caused the cancellation of the second qualifying session of the Red Bull Air Race in Rotterdam on Saturday, leaving British pilot Paul Bonhomme with the fastest time after the initial qualifying run over a course set up in Europe’s busiest port.

The pride of Britain’s liner fleet RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 graced the Dutch port of Rotterdam with its presence on Friday, dropping into Europe’s biggest harbour just in time for the Red Bull Air Race this weekend. Red Bull Air Race pilots Nigel Lamb and Steve Jones of Britain and Hungary's Peter Besenyei greeted the royal vessel with a series of passes from a respectable altitude of 1,000 feet.

Paul Bonhomme was pleased to get back atop the time sheets on Thursday. The championship leader outclassed the field with a brilliant run and seemed especially pleased to have left two of his nearest three rivals in the dust – Mike Mangold was disqualified and Kirby Chambliss did not finish after an incorrect knife penalty.

Paul Bonhomme set the pace in Thursday’s final training session in Rotterdam with a flawless run, finishing ahead of Hannes Arch and Peter Besenyei. Mike Mangold was disqualified by stewards for flying too low and Kirby Chambliss did not finish his run after he was hit with an incorrect knife penalty on an afternoon marred by intermittent rain.

Austrian Hannes Arch jumped to the top of the time sheets for the first time in his Red Bull Air Race career in training on Thursday in Rotterdam, finishing ahead of 2006 champion Kirby Chambliss of the United States and 2008 championship leader Paul Bonhomme of Britain in a morning session interrupted by intermittent rain.

The countdown is on for the fourth stop of the 2008 Red Bull Air Race World Series which takes places in Rotterdam this weekend. It's a much anticipated return to the Dutch port city where in 2005, Mike Mangold won in front of 700,000 spectators, a victory which saw him go on to become the World Champion that year.

Turkish motorcycle sensation, Kenan Sofuoğlu went head to head with British pilot Steve Jones at Hezarfen Airport in Istanbul in a battle of wheels versus wings. Sofuoğlu the 2007 Supersport World Champion hit speeds of 214 km/hr while Jones, who is currently in eighth place in the Red Bull Air Race World Series was just behind with 205 km/hr.

Despite the regrettable cancellation of the Stockholm race, the Red Bull Air Race World Series continues, with Rotterdam now the next stop on the calendar on 19 and 20 July. The first European stop of the season will also mark an eagerly awaited return to the magnificent Dutch port city that hosted a thrilling race in 2005.

Red Bull Air Race regrets to announce that the race in Stockholm, scheduled for 5 & 6 July, will not take place.

The 2008 World Series continues in Rotterdam, the Netherlands on 19 & 20 July which will now be the fourth stop of the season.
